In the first year of the revolution, Benedict Arnold became one of the most important commanders in the Northern theater.  In 1776, he built a fleet on Lake Champlain to challenge the British for control of the Lake and fought the battle of Valcour Island, the first great Naval battle of U. S. History.  He delays the British advance down the Champlain Corridor for a critical year.
